How I Grew Profitability by More Than 400% in Less Than 3 Years

After owning my business for more than 10 years, I felt like we were still a start-up. We were still on the grind. Our revenue was growing. We’d grown every year since our very first year, but we just weren’t getting ahead.

  1. We started thinking strategically. We didn’t just work harder. We analyzed our business to determine what was working, what wasn’t, and how we needed to fix it. We defined WHY we existed, WHAT we stood for, WHO we were serving, and HOW we were serving them.
  2. We refined our ideal customer. We figured out who we wanted to work with. We stopped saying yes to every deal that came our way. We focused our marketing efforts to bring in the right clients. We fired the wrong ones.
  3. We implemented a regular meeting and team structure. This structure was not just about when we scheduled meetings. It was about who was there, how we were doing, and what we needed to accomplish.
  4. We adjusted our pricing. We focused on margin. We didn’t just review our margins every month, we implemented changes to fix them.
  5. We redefined our roles and responsibilities. We started holding people accountable. We built a world-class team. We started getting more done without working more hours.

After implementing these changes, we went from an unprofitable, unreliable, and unfulfilling business, to a profitable, efficient, and sustainable business that was actually fun again!

By focusing on these 5 key areas, we grew bottom line profitability by more than 400% in less than 3 years. One year, we even grew profit by MORE than we grew revenue! Employee retention was at an all-time high. Our systems were running efficiently. Our clients were happy.
